ACIP at 20: Celebrating Growth and Impact

The African Character Initiation Program (ACIP) recently marked 20 years of transforming lives!

On the 16th of November 2024, we celebrated our 20th anniversary together with the graduation of the 2024 cohort. The event was held at Potters House Academy, Eldoret. For two decades, ACIP has worked with young people, parents, and communities to promote safe, meaningful, and character-building initiation practices. Through mentorship, education, and cultural preservation, we have empowered many to embrace humanity, leadership, and responsibility.

The Workshop:

The ACIP 2024 Initiation workshop was launched on the 3rd of November at Potters. The first week was for arrival and registrations. After which the doctors performed the circumcision. The healing process of the boys was coupled up with mentorships, role modeling, and doctor visits.

At ACIP, we believe that their is no full impact of character development without involving the parents of the initiates, and therefore the parent’s workshop is usually at the heart of it. Learning together with parents on the best ways of parenting and some of the challenges they as parents experience with their teenagers. The workshop was held on the 10th of November at Potters. The topics of discussion were:

  1. What makes a good boy/girl?
  2. What kind of man/woman would I wish for my boy/girl?

All of which were conducted as an open forum with our guest panelist, Mrs. Pauline Musi.

On the second week, we had intensive workshops on character molding. The main/core values for the 2024 workshop were integrity and resilience. One of the highlights of the week, the initiates got the opportunity to be mentored by Daniel Komen, who is a renowned runner. He led them on the importance of discipline and self-control as key values in shaping the person they aspire to become.

The graduation was the highlight of the day, where all ACIP alumni since 2004 and all stakeholders came together to celebrate ACIP’s rich history and impact. There was a cake to commemorate the day and sharing a communal meal. As ACIP custom, every graduate takes home an ACIP Jewel, a promise and a Certificate of Commitment.
